OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On 08/10/2023, shortly before 11:00 p.m., Summerville Police Department officers responded to Sunnyside Way after receiving reports of a domestic disturbance involving an armed man. Officers located 31-year-old Andre McKnight outside a residence. During the encounter, officers fired their weapons, striking McKnight. Emergency medical personnel responded, but McKnight died at the scene. The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) assumed responsibility for the investigation.
SLED conducted the criminal investigation under South Carolina's protocol for officer-involved shootings. The agency collected evidence, interviewed witnesses, and submitted its findings to the Ninth Circuit Solicitor's Office for review.
