OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 08/10/2023, at approximately 12:50 p.m., New York State Police troopers and members of the St. Lawrence County Sheriff's Office searched a wooded area along Donnerville Road in the Town of Russell for 34-year-old Shawn Sheridan, who had failed to appear for sentencing after pleading guilty in the shooting of his former fiancée. Investigators located Sheridan at a campsite concealed in the woods.
As officers and a police K9 approached, Sheridan opened fire. A New York State trooper returned fire, striking Sheridan. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The trooper was not injured, but the police K9 was shot and treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
On 08/16/2023, New York State Police released additional details from the investigation. Investigators reported that Sheridan was carrying two long guns, wearing a tactical vest and a bandolier of ammunition, and had additional firearms and ammunition stored in a tent at the campsite. An autopsy determined he died from a gunshot wound.
The New York Attorney General's Office opened the mandatory investigation required for all police shootings resulting in death. Public records later identified the trooper who fired the fatal shot as Trooper Connor Sutton.
