On 08/10/2023, shortly before 4:00 a.m., West Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff's Office deputies attempted to stop a stolen 2018 Nissan Pathfinder. The driver continued driving away while deputies pursued north through West Baton Rouge Parish into Pointe Coupee Parish.
As the pursuit continued north on Louisiana Highway 77 near Smith Acres Lane in Fordoche, the Nissan entered a curve, left the roadway, struck multiple objects, hit a tree, and became engulfed in flames. Deputies pulled the occupants from the burning vehicle before it became fully engulfed. Three occupants died from injuries sustained in the crash, while a fourth occupant survived with serious injuries.
The driver was later identified as Kameron Gaston, 18. The two other people who died were identified as Kortez Morris, 21, and a 16-year-old juvenile. The surviving passenger was identified as Davontae Stubbs, 19, who was hospitalized and later charged with principal to possession of stolen things and principal to criminal mischief.
Louisiana State Police Troop A investigated the fatal crash, while the West Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff's Office conducted the investigation into the vehicle theft and pursuit. Sheriff Mike Cazes stated that deputies rescued all four occupants from the burning Nissan despite the rapidly spreading fire. Investigators reported that at least two of the occupants were wearing body armor when deputies removed them from the vehicle.
