On 10/11/2025, Linton Blackwell was shot and killed in the parking lot behind the Five Paces Inn in the Buckhead neighborhood of Atlanta by off duty Atlanta Police Department officer Gerald Walker. According to investigators, Officer Walker was working an off duty assignment near the bar when an unknown encounter occurred outside the venue. Walker followed Blackwell into a nearby parking area, where he opened fire, striking Blackwell multiple times. An autopsy later determined that Blackwell was shot seventeen times, including gunshot wounds entering his back. Blackwell died at the scene. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation was requested to take over the investigation, and the Fulton County Medical Examiner documented the extent of the gunshot injuries. Family members and community advocates have publicly questioned the circumstances of the shooting and have called for transparency, including the release of body worn camera footage and additional investigative records.
Shooter officer Gerald Walker joined the Atlanta Police Department in 2023. Public records obtained through open records requests show that Walker has a documented disciplinary history with the department. He has accumulated seven total work rule violations during his tenure, six of which were sustained following internal review. Several of the violations involved failures related to body worn camera procedures and arrest related conduct. At the time of the shooting, Walker was still within an active disciplinary reckoning period. The Atlanta Police Department has confirmed that its Internal Affairs unit is conducting a review of Walker’s conduct separate from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation’s criminal inquiry.
