OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 08/23/2023, at approximately 10:40 a.m., Columbus Division of Police officers responded to a reported armed robbery in progress at the Franklin County Auto Title Office, 1583 Alum Creek Drive. Officers arrived within minutes and encountered 36-year-old Jamie David Overstreet in the parking lot. Gunfire erupted almost immediately between Overstreet and responding officers. An officer was shot in the leg, and multiple officers returned fire, striking Overstreet. Both were transported to Grant Medical Center. Overstreet was pronounced dead shortly after arrival, while the wounded officer survived.
The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation assumed responsibility for the investigation. Columbus police later identified the deceased as Jamie David Overstreet. The identities of the involved officers were withheld under Ohio's interpretation of Marsy's Law. The department disclosed only that the officer who fired was a three-year veteran of the Columbus Division of Police.
Investigators recovered multiple firearms at the scene. Another individual was detained during the incident and questioned regarding possible involvement in the robbery. The BCI collected body-worn camera footage, witness statements, forensic evidence, and other physical evidence as part of the investigation.
