OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On 08/09/2023, shortly after midnight, Houston Police Department officers attempted to stop a black Honda Pilot after a 911 caller reported a possible intoxicated driver in the 10600 block of Westheimer Road. The driver continued driving away while officers pursued northbound on the West Sam Houston Parkway service road. During the pursuit, the SUV reversed direction near Little York Road. A Texas Department of Public Safety helicopter joined the pursuit, and Houston police officers reduced their involvement as the helicopter tracked the vehicle from the air.
As the SUV exited toward Bellaire Boulevard, the driver lost control at a high rate of speed. The vehicle rolled several times on the service road, ejecting the 22-year-old female passenger. Houston Fire Department personnel pronounced her dead at the scene. The 32-year-old driver suffered critical injuries and was transported to a hospital. Investigators reported finding beer cans inside the SUV, and officers stated the driver showed signs of impairment. Speeds during the pursuit exceeded 100 mph.
Houston Police stated the pursuit lasted approximately 13 minutes. The investigation was assigned to the HPD Vehicular Crimes Division. Investigators indicated the driver could face felony murder and evading arrest charges in connection with the passenger's death. At the time of the initial investigation, the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences had not publicly released the passenger's identity.
