On March 2, 2021, authorities pursued an SUV suspected of human smuggling that originated near the U.S.–Mexico border in Texas and crossed into California. The chase ended near Holtville, where the overloaded Ford Expedition collided with a tractor-trailer on Highway 115. The crash killed 13 occupants and injured more than a dozen others. U.S. Border Patrol confirmed the vehicle entered the country through a gap in the border fence before the pursuit began. The mass-casualty crash became one of the deadliest pursuit-related incidents linked to cross-border smuggling operations in recent U.S. history.
