OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On 08/08/2023, shortly before 8:00 a.m., Bay County Sheriff's Office deputies responded to a residence in the 2600 block of South Two Mile Road after receiving reports that 46-year-old Daryl J. Socia had stabbed a woman inside the home. The woman escaped the residence with serious injuries and was transported to a hospital for treatment. Deputies established a perimeter while Socia remained inside the residence armed with a handgun.
Deputies attempted to negotiate with Socia before he emerged from the residence carrying the handgun. According to investigators, Socia fired multiple rounds at deputies. Deputies returned fire, striking him. He died at the scene. No deputies were injured during the exchange. The Michigan State Police assumed responsibility for the independent investigation of the shooting.
The Bay County Prosecutor later reviewed the Michigan State Police investigation and determined that the deputies' use of deadly force was legally justified under Michigan law. No criminal charges were filed. Public records reviewed through August 2026 do not identify the deputies who fired their weapons.
