OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On April 2, 2021, deputies with the Coweta County Sheriff’s Office attempted to stop a vehicle traveling around 70 miles per hour in a 45 mile-per-hour zone. The driver, 30-year-old Jamaal Willis-Powell of Covington, refused to stop, and deputies escalated a pursuit lasting roughly 1.7 miles. The vehicle crossed into Fulton County and crashed into a tree near Fayetteville Road and Blossom Street. Passenger Jasmine Simone Hayes, 28, of Palmetto, died at the scene alongside Willis-Powell. The Coweta County Sheriff’s Office released body-camera footage from the pursuit as the investigation continues.
