On April 6, 2021, Redding police tracked a stolen pickup truck equipped with a LoJack device. Officers located the vehicle and pursued it until the driver, 26-year-old Devin Wyteagle Kuykendall, crashed along Highway 273. He fled on foot across nearby railroad tracks while armed with a rifle. When he advanced toward officers near Grandview Avenue and Court Street, police opened fire and killed him. The Shasta County District Attorney later ruled the shooting justified following an independent investigation.
