On April 20, 2021, at approximately 2:17 a.m., a California Highway Patrol officer attempted to stop a white Chevrolet pickup at Fairfax Road and Niles Street for a registration violation. The driver, 25-year-old Branden Lewis LeMay Sr., failed to stop and fled northbound on Fairfax Road before turning westbound onto Panorama Drive. West of Mt. Vernon Avenue, the pickup lost control, veered off the roadway, and rolled down an embankment, landing on its roof in the westbound lane of China Grade Loop. LeMay was ejected from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene. A passenger sustained moderate injuries and was taken to a local hospital.
