On December 9, 2021, Minneapolis police attempted to stop a stolen Mercedes SUV. The driver refused to stop, and police escalated a chase through northeast Minneapolis. The vehicle lost control and crashed at Northeast Lowry Avenue and Hayes Street, splitting into two pieces on impact. Two juveniles in the vehicle were killed, and three others were seriously injured. Shawndale Hickman was killed and so was an unnamed juvenile. The police pursuit began after officers identified the SUV as stolen.
