OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On 08/07/2023, members of the U.S. North Texas Fugitive Task Force located 36-year-old Corey Wayne Thomas inside a pickup truck in the 3700 block of South Tyler Street. Thomas was wanted on a Dallas murder warrant in connection with the July 24, 2023, fatal shooting of Jason Salazar. Task force officers attempted to arrest him after blocking the vehicle. According to investigators, Thomas pointed a handgun toward the officers. Four task force officers fired their service weapons, striking Thomas. He was transported to a hospital, where he died from his injuries. A handgun was recovered from the truck.
On 08/08/2023, one of the officers who fired his weapon, Dallas Police Officer Matthew Bacon, died by suicide. Bacon had served with the Dallas Police Department for 18 years and was assigned to the U.S. North Texas Fugitive Task Force at the time of the shooting. Dallas Police Chief Eddie Garcia stated that no one recognized signs that Bacon was in immediate crisis following the incident.
