On August 1, 2021, Georgia State Patrol and Newton County Police initiated a high-speed pursuit of a stolen vehicle traveling through multiple counties in the Atlanta metro area. The driver continued driving at high speed and refused to stop. The pursuit ended when the stolen vehicle crashed on Interstate 20 near the DeKalb County line, striking another car carrying a pregnant woman. The impact killed the woman and critically injured Bailey, who remained hospitalized for years before being booked into jail in 2025. Family members of the victim have since called for answers regarding the pursuit and the decisions leading up to the fatal crash.
