On 08/09/2021, the Clifton Forge Police Department attempted to stop a vehicle that fled from officers and entered a pursuit. The vehicle then collided with the moped driven by Randall L. Tinsley on Route 696 resulting in Tinsley’s death at the scene. The fleeing driver continued, crashed off the side of Route 696, and then fled on foot.

On August 9, 2021, U.S. Border Patrol agents tracked a group of migrants near Eagle Pass, Texas, for approximately nine hours. They apprehended seven individuals initially, with several others fleeing. Subsequently, agents apprehended five more migrants, including a man from El Salvador. This individual was handcuffed together with two other migrants using two sets of handcuffs. He reportedly became unruly, causing discomfort to the others. When agents attempted to separate him, he tried to escape but was quickly apprehended. Agents restrained him and placed him on the hood of a Border Patrol vehicle, while other migrants were positioned around the vehicle. After approximately one hour, when a transport vehicle arrived, agents discovered the man had died. The incident is under review by relevant authorities.

Deputies from the White County Sheriff's Office pursued a vehicle until it crashed into a tree at high speed near the intersection of W Third Street and S Ripley Street in Brookston, Indiana. The driver, a 23-year-old man from Springfield, Illinois, attempted to flee on foot but was apprehended by deputies. Inside the vehicle, deputies found multiple occupants, including Jaliyah Z. Johnson, a 21-year-old man, an infant named Jeremiah Brown, a juvenile, and a toddler. Johnson and Brown were pronounced dead at the scene.

On August 8, 2021, around midnight, an estimated 200 people and cars were participating in drag racing and drifting at the intersection of Grand Boulevard and Milwaukee in Detroit. Undercover officers from the Detroit Police Department were monitoring the situation from an unmarked vehicle. During the event, their vehicle was struck by another car. The front seat passenger of the vehicle that collided with the officers' car reportedly got out with a handgun. Undercover officers opened fire and killed the passenger.

Deputies were dispatched to the Walmart Supercenter regarding a suspicious person. Employees identified Randal Boyd Burton as a known shoplifter and advised deputies of his vehicle's location. As deputies approached the vehicle, Burton discharged a handgun toward them. Burton fled on foot, and deputies ordered him to drop the weapon. He did not comply and instead fired additional rounds at the deputies, who then shot and killed him.

On August 8, 2021, around 11:00 p.m., White County Sheriff's deputies pursued a black 2013 BMW X3 driven by Joshua Brown, 23, from Springfield, Illinois, westbound on State Road 18 into Brookston. The vehicle passed State Road 43 onto Third Street at a high rate of speed, ran off the road, hit a tree, and came to rest against an abandoned house on Ripley Street.

The driver, Joshua Brown, attempted to flee on foot but was quickly apprehended by deputies. Inside the vehicle, deputies found three adults, one juvenile, one toddler, and one infant. Despite lifesaving efforts, 21-year-old Jaliyah Johnson and 4-month-old Jeremiah Brown were pronounced deceased at the scene by the White County Coroner.
Another passenger, Eric Stokes, was transported to a Monticello area hospital. The juvenile passenger was transported by helicopter to a South Bend area hospital, and the toddler was transported by helicopter to an Indianapolis area hospital.

Further investigation revealed that Joshua Brown was under the influence of a controlled substance. He was transported to a Lafayette area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and later taken to the White County Jail. Brown faces multiple charges, including neglect of a dependent resulting in death, resisting law enforcement with a vehicle causing death, reckless driving causing death, operating a vehicle while intoxicated causing death, and resisting law enforcement.

On August 8, 2021, at approximately 2:00 a.m., a shooting occurred in the parking lot of The District nightclub, located at 4607 Johnston Street in Lafayette, Louisiana. The venue had hosted a concert by Baton Rouge rapper Webbie earlier that evening.
An off-duty moonlighting Lafayette Police Department officer, working security at the event, approached a group involved in an altercation. The officer claims that as he approached, one or more individuals fired at him. The officer returned fire, killing Dashawn "Big Top" Batiste, a 22-year-old man from Breaux Bridge. A female bystander was also shot and sustained non-life-threatening injuries. The officer was unharmed and was not wearing a body camera at the time of the incident.

Louisiana State Police conducted an investigation and determined there was no probable cause to charge the officer. In September 2022, a wrongful death lawsuit was filed by Batiste's daughter, alleging that inadequate security measures at The District contributed to the fatal incident. The lawsuit names The District, Lafayette Consolidated Government, and an unnamed Lafayette Police officer as defendants.

After attempts to negotiate, officers entered the residence and discovered Johnson deceased from a gunshot wound, which was ruled a suicide.

On August 7, 2021, at approximately 12:44 a.m., Bismarck police officers responded to a report of a man acting erratically and screaming outside a residence on East Turnpike Avenue. Upon arrival, officers observed 43-year-old Ryan Pederson attempting to jump a privacy fence into a neighboring property. Pederson appeared agitated, allegedly yelled at officers, and advanced toward them. Police engaged him in a physical altercation while attempting to arrest him.

During the struggle, Pederson was Tasered. It is unknown how many times the Taser was deployed or in which manner. Pederson immediately struggled with control of his arms and legs, suffering a medical emergency. He was transported to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. He had been unarmed.

An autopsy revealed that Pederson had amphetamine and methamphetamine in his system, which is known to enhance the effects of Taser usage. The Burleigh County State’s Attorney's Office cleared the officers of any wrongdoing.

On August 7, 2021, around 1:30 a.m., Ukiah Police attempted to stop a 2017 Volkswagen Beetle for running a red light. The 15-year-old driver fled south on U.S. Highway 101 at over 100 mph. After exiting at Rivino Ranch Road, the car went airborne at the intersection with Burke Hill Drive, crashed into a tree, and landed upside down. Passenger Selena Clark-Quintero, 14, of Potter Valley, died at the scene. The driver and another passenger, a 13-year-old from Ukiah, suffered major injuries.

On August 7, 2021, Bakersfield Police responded to a domestic violence call and separate reports that Che Noe Zuniga Jr., 21, had fired at a security guard. Officers attempted a traffic stop, but Zuniga fled in a green Chevy pickup. The pursuit ended when he crashed near Harris and Stine Roads and fled on foot. Officers later found him hiding in a trash can on the 5700 block of Autumn Crest Drive. When discovered, Zuniga reportedly charged officers and was shot and killed. The California Department of Justice investigated and found the officers’ use of force lawful.

Around 10:34 p.m. on August 6, 2021, Clarksville Police Department officers responded to 681 Ellie Nat Drive regarding a report of a person attempting to cut another person with a knife. Upon arrival, officers found a victim who had sustained injuries from a knife. The man entered the residence, allegedly to retrieve a firearm, leading to a standoff lasting nearly 12 hours. At approximately 9:41 a.m., the individual was found deceased inside the residence from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

On August 6, 2021, at approximately 8:30 p.m., New York State Police troopers responded to reports of a shooting at a residence in Delancey, New York. Upon arrival, they discovered 28-year-old William Effner had been shot. Roger Peter Lynch, 59, who was allegedly involved in the shooting, left.

Troopers later located Lynch's vehicle along State Route 28 and followed it to his residence. When Lynch pulled into his driveway, he fired shots at the troopers. He then locked himself inside the home.

Troopers, unharmed by the gunfire, engaged in communication with Lynch overnight and into the early morning hours. At approximately 7 a.m., Lynch appeared on the porch of his home and allegedly pointed a weapon toward the officers. In response, the troopers shot and killed Lynch.

On August 6, 2021, Zidany Amado, 22, drowned while attempting to elude officers from the Okanogan County Sheriff's Office. At approximately 7:18 p.m., Amado entered the Okanogan River near Old Highway 97. He was observed swimming in the river when he went under the surface in a strong current and did not resurface.

On 08/06/2021, La Habra police responded to a disturbance involving a man who followed a woman from the freeway to the police station. Police confronted him outside the department. He drew a handgun and fired at officers, striking one officer. Police opened fire with multiple rounds and killed him in front of the station.

On August 6, 2021, around 12:14 a.m., a Barron County Sheriff's deputy stopped a vehicle for speeding. Upon approaching the vehicle, the deputy suspected the driver was under the influence of alcohol. The deputy asked the driver to exit the car for a sobriety test, which the driver complied with. The driver then stated he needed to grab something from his car, but the deputy informed him that he was not allowed to do so. Despite this, the driver drove off, and the deputy initiated a pursuit. After about seven miles, the deputy lost sight of the vehicle and ended the chase. Police later found the vehicle had crashed into a tree in a field driveway. The passenger was killed in the crash, and the driver, who was arrested for his sixth offense of operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated, was taken to Barron Hospital with minor injuries. The driver was also arrested for homicide by intoxicated use of a motor vehicle and fleeing an officer.

On August 5, 2021, around 5:45 p.m., Seattle Police responded to a home in the 10000 block of 21st Avenue Southwest to serve an arrest warrant for Isaiah Hinds, who was wanted in connection with a homicide in Seattle. Officers used a PA system from outside the house to instruct Hinds to surrender. When Hinds exited the home, allegedly armed with a handgun, an exchange of gunfire ensued between him and the police. Hinds was shot and killed during the confrontation.

On 08/05/2021, Los Angeles police attempted to stop a vehicle wanted in an armed robbery investigation. The driver refused to stop and police escalated a chase through Northridge at very high speed. No PIT maneuvers were reported. Around 12:30 a.m., the fleeing vehicle entered the intersection of Nordhoff Street and Tampa Avenue and collided with the car driven by Erick Barbosa-Guardado. He died at the scene. Police arrested the driver of the fleeing vehicle after the crash.

On 08/05/2021, law enforcement responded to a hit-and-run accident in eastern Idaho and located a vehicle they felt may be involved. A Blackfoot police officer initiated a low-speed pursuit. The vehicle crashed and three individuals fled on foot. A sheriff’s deputy was shot in the arm during the encounter. One of the men was found dead at the scene; authorities did not release details of how that person died.

On August 4, 2021, Michigan State Police received information about a man and woman in possession of a stolen minivan at a rest area. During an attempted traffic stop, they did not stop. Police escalated a high-speed chase. The troopers eventually lost sight of the vehicle but later discovered the scene where the stolen minivan and two other vehicles had crashed in the front yard of a home on East Maple Street and East Street in Holly Township.

The man and woman then entered an occupied home, releasing the homeowners without harm. The woman surrendered to the police, but William Lanham, the man, fired at officers while remaining inside the house. Eventually, Lanham was found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound inside the residence.

On August 4, 2021, at approximately 12:30 a.m., Glendora Police Department officers responded to a domestic violence call on Myrtle Street, where a woman reported that her boyfriend, 21-year-old Dylan Christopher Harmer, had assaulted her and was armed with a handgun. Upon arrival, Harmer exited the residence and pointed a black semi-automatic handgun at the officers before retreating back inside. He then fled the scene on foot. Azusa Police Department officers were called to assist in the search.

Harmer was located near the intersection of Glendora Avenue and West Route 66, where he was attempting to carjack at least two vehicles. When confronted by officers, he reportedly turned and pointed his firearm at an Azusa Police Department officer, who then shot and killed him.

Investigation:
The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department is assisting the Azusa Police Department in the investigation of this officer-involved shooting. The names of the involved officers have not been publicly disclosed.

On August 4, 2021, at approximately 1:30 p.m., officers from the Mansfield Police Department and Ontario Police Department arrived at a residence on the 3300 block of Peterson Road to serve an arrest warrant for 38-year-old Sean Rowe. Authorities reported that Rowe had refused to turn himself in multiple times over a month-long period and had locked his property to prevent entry.

Police deployed pepper gas into the home. As officers attempted to force their way inside, Rowe exited onto the front deck before retreating back into the house. Police stated that Rowe threatened officers with weapons. Two officers fired their weapons, fatally striking Rowe.

The incident is under investigation by the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI).

On August 3, 2021, around 10:40 a.m., Austin William Lanz exited a bus at the Pentagon Transit Center and immediately attacked Officer George Gonzalez with a knife. Officer Gonzalez was killed during the attack. Lanz then took the officer's gun and shot and killed himself.

Antonio D. King, a 22-year-old Black male, was shot and killed by officers from the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department on August 3, 2021, near the intersection of Antioch Pike and Franklin Limestone Road in Nashville, Tennessee. Earlier, King allegedly opened fire inside a Smile Direct Club facility, wounding three people. Metro Police officers responded to the active shooter incident and fatally shot King at the scene.

On 08/03/2021, the Plymouth Township Police Department responded to a call at the Plymouth Gardens apartments around 11:30 p.m. in Conshohocken, Pennsylvania. Upon arrival, officers encountered a 22-year-old man with a handgun outside the building. A woman was also present, suffering from multiple stab wounds. Police shot and killed him.

Waco police responded to a call at 10:07 a.m. reporting a man had shot another man at the Rex-Plex Apartments. Officers arrived five minutes later and found a man dead from two gunshot wounds to the abdomen. The shooter, Ent Wright, initially barricaded himself inside an apartment. He then exited the apartment with a gun, reportedly fired multiple shots, and was shot and killed by officers.

As the chase continued into the intersection of Cairo Road and US 60, he collided with a Ford Explorer driven by 60-year-old Deborah Barge. Young and Barge died at the crash site. The Kentucky State Police investigated.

On August 1, 2021, a man ran from Riverside Police officers during a foot pursuit on Vernon Avenue. During the chase, the man fell and struck his head. He was transported to a hospital, where he died from the head injury. No name has been publicly released. On August 1, 2021, Georgia State Patrol and Newton County Police initiated a high-speed pursuit of a stolen vehicle traveling through multiple counties in the Atlanta metro area. The driver continued driving at high speed and refused to stop. The pursuit ended when the stolen vehicle crashed on Interstate 20 near the DeKalb County line, striking another car carrying a pregnant woman. The impact killed the woman and critically injured Bailey, who remained hospitalized for years before being booked into jail in 2025. Family members of the victim have since called for answers regarding the pursuit and the decisions leading up to the fatal crash.

On August 1, 2021, officers attempted to stop Logan Anthony Zappa after noticing that the license plates on his 2000 Pontiac Grand Prix did not match the vehicle. Zappa fled the scene, leading to a five-minute pursuit. The officers reportedly discontinued the chase shortly thereafter. A short time later, St. Croix County sheriff's deputies responded to a crash at the intersection of County Road T and County Road H in Stanton, where Zappa was found seriously injured. Zappa had run a stop sign and collided with a pickup truck, resulting in his death.

On 08/01/2021, Julius Filep, 55, exited a stopped car and walked into the oncoming lane of traffic on State Route 18 in East Brunswick, New Jersey. Officer Mitchell Ngai of the East Brunswick Police Department was operating a marked patrol vehicle, responding to a reported motor vehicle accident in the southbound lanes. At approximately 4:13 a.m., Officer Ngai, traveling northbound near the accident site, struck and killed Filep.

On 07/31/2021, 28 year old Jonathan Calderon was a passenger in a vehicle driven by Ruben Garcia in Kuna, Idaho. Kuna Police pursued the vehicle after Garcia was suspected of driving under the influence. The vehicle crashed, resulting in Calderon’s death. The incident began as a DUI-related traffic stop and ended in a fatal crash.
