OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 10/29/2025 just after 5:00 p.m., officers from the Birmingham Police Department responded to a call on Brunson Avenue in the Zion City neighborhood about a violent disturbance involving potential weapons. Upon arrival, the subject, Vanessa Ragland, was confrontational. Officers first attempted to gain control using less-lethal force. When Ragland continued to fight with an officer, an officer discharged their firearm, striking Ragland. She was transported to a hospital where she later died. No officers were injured. The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) State Bureau of Investigation is leading the investigation and will submit its findings to the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office.
