OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On 08/06/2023, shortly after midnight, Lancaster City police officers responded to a residence in the first block of West New Street after a homeowner, who was away from the property, reported through a home security system that someone had entered the house. The homeowner instructed her 14-year-old son, who was inside, to climb onto the roof and wait for police. Officers positioned themselves behind the residence after learning the person was still inside.
Darron Shaw exited the rear of the residence carrying a loaded 9 mm privately manufactured handgun with an extended magazine. Officers gave verbal commands for him to raise his hands. According to the Lancaster County District Attorney, Shaw pointed the handgun toward responding officers. Two officers fired their weapons, striking Shaw four to five times. Shaw ran approximately 100 feet, climbed a fence, collapsed, and officers rendered medical aid before he was transported to Lancaster General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The handgun was recovered near the fence.
The Lancaster County Coroner ruled the death a homicide caused by multiple gunshot wounds. After reviewing body camera footage, surveillance video, witness statements, and forensic evidence, the Lancaster County District Attorney concluded the officers' use of deadly force was legally justified. The officers' identities were not released because no criminal charges were filed.
