OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On 03/09/2021, Riverside police responded to a report of a man armed with a gun near the 3700 block of Iowa Avenue. When officers arrived, the man, identified as 19-year-old Jehlani Black, ran from the area. Police escalated a foot pursuit that continued to the 1500 block of University Avenue. During the chase, Officer Sergio Mercado opened fire, striking Black. He was pronounced dead at the scene. A loaded handgun was recovered nearby. The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department Force Investigations Detail is conducting the investigation.
