On 05/12/2021, in Bakersfield, California, law enforcement agencies responded to a reported attempted kidnapping of a juvenile in the 2200 block of Niles Street. The man fled in a vehicle, leading a pursuit southbound on Highway 99 and then northbound on Interstate 5. The chase ended when the vehicle struck the center guardrail repeatedly, became disabled just north of the I-5 split, and was involved in a standoff. SWAT officers deployed a Taser and took the adult male suspect into custody, but he became unresponsive and was transported to a hospital where he died. The investigation into the cause of death is ongoing.
