OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On 08/05/2023, at approximately 2:14 a.m., Lafayette Police Department officers responded to a report of a fight in progress at a residence in the 100 block of South General Marshall Street. After officers contacted the people involved, a man opened fire on the officers, striking two Lafayette police officers multiple times. A third officer returned fire.
During the exchange of gunfire, Kaci Giselle Cyprian, a 19-month-old child, was struck by gunfire. Her mother, Jowanna Christina, another child, and the man who fired on police were also struck. Kaci was transported to a hospital, where she died from her injuries. Investigators stated it was not immediately clear whose gunfire struck the civilian victims.
On August 10, 2023, police arrested John Nicholas, 30, and charged him with first-degree murder in Kaci's death, five counts of attempted first-degree murder, domestic abuse with child endangerment, battery of a dating partner with child endangerment, false imprisonment with a dangerous weapon, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. Authorities identified the child as Kaci Giselle Cyprian after her family publicly released her name.
