On 07/14/2021, off-duty Chicago Police Department officer Michael Leverett was driving his pickup truck in the West Rogers Park neighborhood of Chicago when he failed to stop at a stop sign and struck 9-year-old Hershel Weinberger, who was riding his bicycle in a crosswalk. Weinberger was pronounced dead following the crash. Documents show that Officer Leverett had previously been suspended for 11 months for misconduct.
