OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
.
REASON FOR POLICE CHASE:
Outstanding felony warrants. At approximately 3:30 a.m., an Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officer saw Edward Baxter driving a 2001 Buick LeSabre near Kentucky Avenue and South Tibbs Avenue and recognized him as a person with active felony warrants. The officer attempted to stop Baxter, who continued driving away at high speed while IMPD pursued. Initial reporting had described the vehicle's registered owner only as a person wanted in connection with another crime; the later probable-cause affidavit established that police recognized Baxter and knew he had outstanding felony warrants.
.
EVENT NARRATIVE:
On 10/24/2025, 33-year-old Alicia Nicole Lane was killed while riding in the front passenger seat of a Buick LeSabre driven by Edward Baxter during an Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department pursuit on the city's southwest side. Baxter crashed the Buick into a semi-truck at Raymond and Harding streets.
.
The pursuit began at approximately 3:30 a.m. after an IMPD officer recognized Baxter and attempted to stop him because of outstanding felony warrants. Baxter continued driving away, and police pursued through southwest Indianapolis.
.
The pursuit covered approximately four miles and lasted about 13 minutes. Police reported that Baxter weaved through traffic, entered opposing lanes and reached speeds approaching 100 mph.
.
Vehicle data later provided a precise measurement of Baxter's speed immediately before the collision. The Buick's airbag control module recorded approximately 98–99 mph in a 45-mph zone before Baxter began braking.
.
At Raymond and Harding streets, police alleged that Baxter entered the intersection against a red traffic signal. A semi-truck was legally turning west on Raymond Street with a green light. The Buick crashed into the semi-trailer, became lodged underneath it and was dragged.
.
Alicia suffered fatal head injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. Baxter suffered serious injuries and was transported to Eskenazi Hospital in critical condition. The semi-truck driver survived.
.
No PIT/TVI maneuver, stop-stick deployment, roadblock or intentional police-vehicle contact immediately preceding the fatal collision was reported in the available accounts.
.
Alicia was born in Indianapolis on 03/04/1992 and graduated from Decatur Central High School. She was the mother of six children: Hayden, Trentyn, Owen, Corbyn, Oda and Oaklynn. Her obituary remembers ordinary pieces of her life that mattered to her—going out for breakfast with her children, taking them for walks in the park, shopping, and driving with the windows down and the radio turned up.
.
Baxter survived his injuries and underwent months of medical treatment and rehabilitation. He was arrested in January 2026 after his release from rehabilitation. Prosecutors charged him with four felonies arising from the pursuit and Alicia's death.
.
Post-crash toxicology testing found THC, amphetamine and methamphetamine in Baxter's blood. These findings were developed after the collision and were not the initiating reason for the police pursuit; police attempted to stop Baxter because of his outstanding felony warrants.
.
OFFICER BACKGROUND:
The IMPD officer who initially recognized Baxter, attempted the traffic stop and participated in the pursuit has not been publicly identified in the available reporting.
.
DISPOSITION:
Edward Baxter was arrested in January 2026 after recovering sufficiently from his crash injuries to leave rehabilitation. He was charged with four felonies in connection with the pursuit and Alicia Lane's death. The criminal case remains pending; no conviction or final disposition has been established.
