On 07/26/2021, a Whitfield County Sheriff's Office deputy attempted to stop a vehicle in the Tunnel Hill area for a traffic violation. When the driver continued driving away, the deputy initiated a pursuit that continued south on U.S. Highway 41 toward Dalton.
According to investigators, the pursuit continued at high speed until the vehicle entered the intersection of Highway 41 and Shugart Road, where it collided with multiple vehicles, including a tractor-trailer. Christy Leigh Lawing, a 27-year-old passenger in the vehicle, and the driver, Kaleb M. Brown, were both pronounced dead at the scene. Several other people involved in the crash sustained injuries, though none were reported to be life-threatening.
