On 08/03/2023, Parma Police Department officers attempted to stop a vehicle for a traffic violation. The driver continued driving away, and officers pursued the vehicle into Cleveland's Old Brooklyn neighborhood. At the intersection of Pearl Road and Altoona Road, the fleeing vehicle collided with another vehicle driven by 21-year-old Janet Reyes who died at the scene. Several other people were injured and transported to area hospitals.
The driver of the fleeing vehicle was arrested. The crash closed Pearl Road for several hours while investigators processed the scene. The pursuit and crash were investigated by the Cleveland Division of Police and Parma Police Department.
