Summary:
On 12/04/2025, 32-year-old Casey Barnes was shot and killed by Louisville Metro Police Department officers after police responded around 1:30 p.m. to the 9000 block of Red Deer Circle in the Hurstbourne Acres area on a report that a shirtless man was pointing a gun at a woman at an apartment complex. Officers located a man matching the description and observed him holding a firearm near a stairwell leading to the parking lot. Officers Michael Crowe and Austin Taylor ordered Barnes to drop the gun. When he did not comply, both officers fired their weapons, striking Barnes. He was pronounced dead at the scene by responding personnel. The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office later identified the man as Casey Barnes. Police said body-worn camera footage will be released in accordance with department protocol. Personnel records released by LMPD show Officer Crowe was hired in 2017 and previously received a letter of reprimand for procedural violations during a 2021 non-fatal shooting and pursuit incident, and Officer Taylor was hired in 2020 with commendations and one reprimand for missing court dates. No public reporting as of this writing indicates any criminal charges against the officers.
