OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On 12/05/2025, Tifton police officers attempted to serve a search warrant at a residence on the 800 block of Lee Avenue in Tifton, Georgia. During the encounter, Davy Deonte Royal opened fire, striking two police investigators. Police escalated the response and surrounded the residence, leading to a prolonged standoff that lasted several hours. Royal eventually surrendered and was taken into custody. Days later, while being held in jail, Royal was found unresponsive in his cell and later died at a hospital. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation determined that Royal’s death was the result of suicide following the police standoff and shooting incident.
