OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 12/08/2025, Alex Canizales, age 40, died after being shot by Los Angeles Police Department officers in the West Valley Division of Los Angeles, California. Shortly after midnight, LAPD West Valley patrol officers responded to a radio call reporting an assault with a deadly weapon in the 18900 block of Sherman Way. While officers were speaking with a possible victim, they heard nearby gunfire. A perimeter was established with assistance from the LAPD Air Support Division. Officers located Canizales armed with a handgun in front of a convenience store. An officer-involved shooting occurred during the encounter, and Canizales was struck by gunfire. Los Angeles Fire Department personnel pronounced Canizales deceased at the scene. A handgun was recovered and booked as evidence. One community member sustained a superficial injury possibly from shrapnel. Notifications to Canizales’s next of kin were conducted by LAPD’s Family Liaison Section.
