OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 12/19/2025 at about 1:00 a.m., Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department officers conducted a traffic stop near Valley View Boulevard and Twain Avenue for a vehicle without a license plate. A back-seat passenger, 25-year-old Wunya Lynum, was stopped for not wearing a seatbelt and gave officers a false name. After officers attempted to verify his identity, Lynum left the scene and was later found hiding beneath a parked vehicle. Officers reported that Lynum was holding an object they believed to be a firearm. Officers ordered him to drop the object and deployed a Taser, which was ineffective. An officer then opened fire, striking Lynum. Police later acknowledged that the object in Lynum’s hand was a cell phone. Lynum died from the gunshot wound. The shooting is under investigation and has drawn public scrutiny due to the misidentification of a cell phone as a weapon.
