OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 12/23/2025 at approximately 2:36 a.m., Groton Town police attempted a traffic stop on a 1996 Geo Prizm after observing it speeding through a red light and making an illegal turn. The driver, later identified as 23-year-old Nigel Badal of Groton, fled from officers at high speed. The pursuit continued onto Long Hill Road South and then onto Kings Highway, where his vehicle crashed into a steel traffic pole. Emergency responders provided aid at the scene and Badal was transported to Lawrence + Memorial Hospital in New London, where he later died from his injuries. A loaded handgun was found inside the vehicle during extrication efforts. The Connecticut State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Squad responded to investigate the crash. The incident remains under investigation.
