OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 12/17/2025, law enforcement in eastern Idaho was searching for 26-year-old Landon Smith after he was linked to a domestic disturbance and an allegedly stolen vehicle earlier that night. Deputies from the Bonneville County Sheriff’s Office located Smith’s vehicle and engaged in efforts to stop it. A PIT maneuver forced the vehicle off the road on North County Line Road. Smith then fired rounds at deputies and two deputies returned fire. Smith suffered a gunshot wound and was treated at the scene before being transported to Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center. He was declared brain dead on 12/21 and was officially pronounced deceased on 12/22/2025. The incident remains under investigation by the East Idaho Critical Incident Team.
