On 12/21/2025, Illinois State Police conducted a traffic stop on IL-54 near Lincoln after identifying a vehicle described as suspicious. During the stop, officers determined the driver, Richard K. Saunders, had a suspended license. Police attempted to physically remove Saunders from the vehicle. Officers alleged that the vehicle moved forward during the interaction, resulting in an officer being dragged. Saunders then drove away. Troopers later located the vehicle, stopped it, and took Saunders into custody. Shortly after the arrest, Saunders went into medical distress. He was transported for medical care and died. The circumstances surrounding his medical emergency and death remain under investigation.
