On 12/26/2025, Rene Gutierrez, 47, died while being placed in the custody of the McAllen Police Department following police contact at a residence in the 2400 block of Kendlewood Avenue in McAllen, Texas. Officers detained Gutierrez during the response to an incident at the location. While in custody, he became unresponsive and later died. His death was publicly reported as one of several in-custody deaths occurring in Hidalgo County during December 2025.
