On 04/19/2021, Alameda police officers restrained Mario Gonzalez after responding to a report of a man acting erratically at a local business. Officers pinned Gonzalez face-down on the ground and applied body weight to his back for more than five minutes while he was handcuffed. During the restraint, Gonzalez became unresponsive. He was later pronounced dead. A second independent autopsy concluded that Gonzalez died from restraint asphyxiation, contradicting initial official findings and intensifying public scrutiny over prone restraint practices and police use of force.
