On 04/12/2021, Knoxville Police Department officers responded to Austin-East Magnet High School after a report the 17-year-old student Anthony Thompson Jr. was armed and involved in an altercation. Officers located Thompson inside a school bathroom. During a struggle, shots were fired and Thompson was struck and killed by police. A Knoxville District Attorney’s Office later determined officers would not face criminal charges for the shooting.
