OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On 01/06/2021, Ashli Babbitt was inside the United States Capitol building during the breach of the Capitol. Video footage and law enforcement accounts show Babbitt attempting to climb through a broken window leading into the Speaker’s Lobby area near the House chamber. A U.S. Capitol Police officer fired a single shot, striking Babbitt. She was transported from the building and later pronounced dead. The shooting was reviewed by the U.S. Department of Justice and by internal Capitol Police investigations, both of which concluded the use of force was justified and no criminal charges would be filed. Babbitt’s family later filed a civil wrongful death lawsuit, which resulted in a settlement with the federal government.
