On 01/07/2021, at approximately 6: 20 a.m., members of the Michigan State Police Emergency Support Team were executing a high-risk search warrant at a residence located in the 400 block of East Broad Street, Chesaning, Michigan. The warrant was being served on behalf of the Bay Area Narcotics Enforcement Team (BAYANET). As the troopers approached the front of the house, John R. Neitling confronted them while armed with a gun. In response, the troopers shot and killed him.This was reportedly the third drug raid at his residence in the past five years. An internal investigation found no violation of departmental policies and the officers returned to work. Neitling was described in his obituary as someone who enjoyed fishing, camping, music, and spending time with family and friends, and he worked at Maximum Roofing among other odd jobs. He is survived by his wife, two sons, a stepdaughter, and extended family.

On the evening of 10/10/2025, the Baytown Police Department attempted a traffic stop on a vehicle (BMW) travelling at a high rate of speed on SH-146 near Alexander Drive. The driver refused to stop and a pursuit ensued. The chase crossed into Chambers County where deputies joined. Less than a mile later the fleeing vehicle collided head-on with another vehicle near Crystal Boulevard; the male driver of the fleeing vehicle was ejected and died at the scene, while the occupants of the other vehicle were treated for non‐life‐threatening injuries.

On January 7, 2021, at approximately 3 a.m., a driver allegedly ran a stop sign at Atlantic Street and Minnehaha Avenue while driving a stolen Ford Focus at 61 mph in a 30-mph zone upon the driver spotting a St. Paul police officer focusing om him. The officer had noticed the stolen car, confirmed via license plate check that it was stolen the previous day, and escalated to chase that ended when the pursued vehicle crashed into bystander Alison Annen, killing her.

On January 7, 2021, Salem Police officers attempted to arrest 28-year-old Kristopher Allen Rice, who had an outstanding warrant. Rice ran into the Willamette River near Wallace Marine Park. Despite search efforts, he was not located at that time. On January 23, 2021, his body was discovered entangled in brush and partially submerged near the west bank of Wallace Marine Park. The Polk County Medical Examiner determined that there was no evidence of foul play, and the cause of death was presumed to be drowning.

On 01/06/2021, Robert Howard was taken from a residence in the 3500 block of Mark Twain Street in Memphis by on duty Memphis police officer Patric Ferguson. According to court records, Ferguson encountered Howard outside the home while armed with his personal handgun and forced him into the back of a police vehicle. Ferguson then drove Howard less than half a mile to the area of Frayser Boulevard and Denver Street. Howard was later found dead from gunshot wounds. Ferguson was arrested and charged in state court with first degree murder and kidnapping. Federal prosecutors later charged Ferguson with civil rights violations related to Howard’s death.

On 01/06/2021, Ashli Babbitt was inside the United States Capitol building during the breach of the Capitol. Video footage and law enforcement accounts show Babbitt attempting to climb through a broken window leading into the Speaker’s Lobby area near the House chamber. A U.S. Capitol Police officer fired a single shot, striking Babbitt. She was transported from the building and later pronounced dead. The shooting was reviewed by the U.S. Department of Justice and by internal Capitol Police investigations, both of which concluded the use of force was justified and no criminal charges would be filed. Babbitt’s family later filed a civil wrongful death lawsuit, which resulted in a settlement with the federal government.

The FBI's Safe Streets Task Force was conducting an investigation in Hartford, Connecticut. During the investigation, a suspect was identified and arrested. A secondary individual, Benicio Vasquez, became involved and exchanged gunfire with officers. New Britain Police Officer Christopher Kiely and an FBI agent shot and killed Vasquez.

On January 6, 2021, Tigard Police Department officers responded to a domestic disturbance at the Edgewood Manor Apartments near Southwest Hall Boulevard and Southwest Bonita Road. Upon arrival, they found 26-year-old Jacob Ryan Macduff experiencing a mental health crisis and locked inside his pickup truck. During the standoff, officers reported that Macduff was armed with a knife. Officers fired bean bag rounds to break the truck's windshield. Officer Gabriel Maldonado then fired multiple shots, killing Macduff.

On 01/05/2021, an off duty Austin police officer reported a road incident involving Alexander Gonzales Jr while driving in southeast Austin. According to police accounts, the off duty officer said Gonzales pointed a firearm at him from another vehicle. Uniformed Austin police officers later located Gonzales near 2500 Wickersham Lane. Police said officers gave commands for him to exit his vehicle. Gonzales exited the vehicle and moved toward the rear passenger area, where his young son was seated. An officer then opened fire, shooting and killing Gonzales. Gonzales was pronounced dead at the scene. A Travis County grand jury later declined to indict the officers involved. The City of Austin reinstated the officers after an internal review. Gonzales’s family filed a civil lawsuit, and the city later agreed to a settlement.

On January 5, 2021, Spokane Police officers were searching for a person connected to a December 27, 2020, homicide. They located Joseph Buskirk driving in North Spokane. When officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop, Buskirk tried to escape in his vehicle. Police disabled the vehicle, and after it came to a stop, Buskirk exited the car and allegedly began firing a weapon at officers. Police shot and killed him during the exchange.

On January 5, 2021, at approximately 10:23 a.m., Houston Police Department officers were conducting surveillance on alleged robbers near 16510 North Freeway. Three men arrived at the location in a vehicle. Two of them entered a hotel while the third remained outside. When the two men returned, officers moved in to arrest them. Two of the men attempted to flee on foot, while Jose Guzman allegedly reached for a pistol in his waistband. An officer opened fire, killing Guzman at the scene.

On January 5, 2021, at approximately 10:22 a.m., East Cleveland police officers initiated a pursuit of a vehicle believed to be stolen, occupied by three individuals. On January 5, 2021, at approximately 1:43 p.m., Newton Police responded to a 911 call from the owner of "Indulge!", a candy store located at 16 Lincoln Street, reporting a man with a knife inside the store. The individual, identified as 28-year-old Michael Conlon, resided in an apartment above the store. Upon police arrival, Conlon fled to the third floor of the building. Officers attempted to negotiate with him and employed less-lethal methods, including a beanbag shotgun and a Taser, in efforts to subdue him. Despite these attempts, Conlon reportedly advanced towards officers with the knife. Two Newton Police officers opened fire, striking Conlon. He was transported to Newton-Wellesley Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

On 01/04/2021, shortly after 3 a.m., Payson police officers responded to multiple calls reporting a man behaving erratically near the Town of Payson Community Development building and later near the Bison Cove Apartments. Callers reported the man was talking to himself and was seen near or inside a parked vehicle that did not belong to him. Officers located Michael Romo near the vehicle and attempted to detain him. Police said Romo did not comply with commands to get on the ground. According to police statements, Romo moved toward officers while holding a knife. Officers opened fire, shooting and killing him.

On 01/03/2021, officers from the Jefferson City Police Department responded to a report of a disturbance involving a man with a knife at the Wildwood Shopping Center, 3535 Missouri Boulevard, in Jefferson City. According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, when officers encountered James Reising, he was reportedly agitated and holding a large knife. Officers issued verbal commands for him to drop the weapon, but Reising allegedly ignored commands and continued to pose a threat. Officers fired their weapons, striking Reising. He was transported by ambulance to St. Mary’s Hospital in Jefferson City, where he was later pronounced dead. A review by the Cole County prosecutor determined the shooting was justified and no charges were filed against the officers involved.

On January 3, 2021, at approximately 12:30 p.m., Suffolk County Police officers were pursuing Malcolm Stewart, 29, who was allegedly driving a 2014 Mercedes-Benz in Medford, New York. Stewart ran a red light during the chase, causing his vehicle to collide with a 2021 Chevrolet driven by James Palumbo, 56, at the intersection of County Road 101 and Station Road. The crash resulted in Palumbo’s death.

The call stated that Tre-Kedrian Tyquan White was outside the homewith a handgun and causing a disturbance. Around 2:30 a.m., Homestead Police responded to a burglary-in-progress call at a home located at 100 NE Civic Court in Homestead, Florida. Officers began blocking off the area and reportedly saw a man running away. La Garion Smith, 27, allegedly produced a firearm and shot at the Homestead officers. In response, the officers shot and killed him.

Police responded to a call at 12:20 p.m. regarding Henry Martinez Jr. allegedly holding a woman, Carlen Mercado, against her will. Martinez was reported to have a knife and was threatening to kill Mercado. Officers and deputies arrived at the trailer home and engaged in hours of unsuccessful negotiations with Martinez. Attempts to force him out of the building using flashbangs and gas were unsuccessful. Martinez allegedly pointed a knife toward police, and they opened fire, killing him. Mercado was found deceased inside, having apparently been dead for some time.
The incident is under investigation by the Oregon State Police, with findings to be reviewed by the Malheur County District Attorney's Office.

The deputy’s vehicle struck the civilian vehicle as it attempted to make a left turn. Sandra Eisner, 77, was among the occupants of the civilian car and died at the scene from injuries sustained in the crash. An 85-year-old passenger also died in the collision. The deputy involved was treated for non-life-threatening injuries. Later reporting indicated the deputy was cited for driving too fast for conditions. Eisner’s estate accepted a settlement from the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office in a wrongful death lawsuit related to the crash.

Authorities said the deputy was driving at a high rate of speed while responding to a reported domestic disturbance call. The patrol vehicle collided with the civilian vehicle, killing Brower at the scene. Sandra Eisner, a 77 year old woman traveling in the same vehicle, was also killed. The deputy survived and later received a traffic citation. Brower’s family pursued civil action related to the crash.
