OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 02/04/2021, shortly after 1 p.m., Nevada County sheriff’s deputies responded to multiple calls reporting a woman walking in the roadway on Alta Sierra Drive with two small children. Callers said the woman appeared distressed and possibly impaired. Deputies made contact with Ariella Sage Eloise Crawford within minutes of arriving. During the encounter, deputies Caleb Toderean and Matthew Harrison opened fire and killed Crawford at the scene. Reporting later indicated that Crawford feared deputies were there to take her children and that deputies said she was holding a knife. The district attorney later cleared the deputies, and a civil appeal filed on behalf of the children was denied.
