OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On 02/05/2021, California Highway Patrol officers responded to reports of a man in crisis on Interstate 10 near San Antonio Avenue in Upland. Earlier, McMurtry’s wife had contacted authorities seeking help, reporting that he was suicidal. McMurtry was observed moving between lanes of traffic on the freeway while holding a knife. During the encounter with CHP officers, the situation escalated and a trooper opened fire, killing McMurtry at the scene. The district attorney later ruled the shooting justified. McMurtry’s family subsequently filed a civil claim against the state.
