On 02/26/2021, Walker County sheriff’s deputies responded to a domestic disturbance at a home on Coon Creek Road in Empire. During the response, Frederick Earl Hight was involved in an encounter with a deputy inside the residence. According to reporting, a struggle occurred, and the deputy shot and killed Hight in the presence of his father. Family members later stated that Hight and his father had documented histories of mental illness. The shooting later became the subject of a federal wrongful-death lawsuit that resulted in a settlement.
