On 04/14/2021, a Harris County sheriff’s deputy shot and killed 46 year old Marcelo Garcia at his home in northeast Harris County. Garcia’s wife called police requesting help, stating that her husband was experiencing a mental health crisis. While en route, the deputy requested a mental health response unit, but none was available.
The deputy arrived at the residence and made contact with Garcia at the front door. During the encounter, Garcia held a knife. The deputy issued commands for Garcia to drop the knife. The deputy deployed a Taser and then opened fire, striking Garcia multiple times. Garcia died at the scene.
