On 04/19/2021, Dothan police shot and killed 39 year old Doward Sylleen Baker following a traffic stop near Trim Street and Third Avenue. An officer stopped Baker’s vehicle for not displaying a license plate. During the stop, police stated the officer observed a firearm inside the vehicle. Baker drove a short distance and stopped again nearby.
Police reported that Baker exited the vehicle while holding a gun. An officer deployed a Taser. During the encounter, police stated that Baker fired a shot that struck an officer in the leg. A second officer arrived, and officers opened fire, killing Baker at the scene.
