On 05/01/2021, Metro Nashville Police Department officers responded to a wooded area behind a Goodwill facility on Nolensville Pike after Jacob Griffin’s mother called 911 reporting her son was armed, dangerous, and had been sending messages referring to “mass murder,” along with photos of a firearm and ammunition. Officers contacted Griffin at his campsite. According to police statements, he refused to surrender a firearm and an ineffective Taser deployment was attempted. Negotiators and SWAT units, along with a mobile crisis team, spent several hours trying to persuade Griffin to exit. During the prolonged encounter, officers allege Griffin fired his pistol at least twice; following the second shot, a SWAT officer fired, striking Griffin. He was transported to a hospital where he died from his injuries. Reporting notes police released partial 911 and body camera footage and indicated multiple investigations and an administrative review were ongoing.
