On 05/04/2021, Camden County Sheriff’s Office deputies served a drug-related search warrant at a residence near US-17 and Kinlaw Road in Woodbine. During the entry into the home, law enforcement and occupants fired shots. Latoya Denis James was struck by gunfire and died at the scene. A second person at the residence was also shot and survived. Authorities stated there was an exchange of gunfire when deputies made entry. Family members later disputed aspects of the shooting, and partial body camera footage was released by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.
