OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On 05/23/2021, Athens-Clarke County police officers responded to reports of a man with a gun at a park near Trail Creek Street. While officers were en route, police reported that the man took a vehicle at gunpoint. Officers later located the vehicle and made contact with Juan Joseph Daniele Castellano. Police stated that Castellano exited the vehicle holding a firearm and made verbal demands. Officers ordered him to put the gun down. Police then fired, shooting and killing Castellano at the scene. No officers were charged, and no final prosecutorial outcome beyond the initial review was reported.
