OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On 05/24/2021, Marcelo Pelaez was crossing Woodhaven Boulevard at Rockaway Boulevard in a marked crosswalk in Queens when he was struck by a vehicle driven by an off-duty New York City police officer. Pelaez was hit in the roadway and pronounced dead at the scene. Reporting later indicated the officer may have been traveling at a high rate of speed at the time of the collision. The New York Attorney General’s Office conducted a special investigation into the death and ultimately cleared the officer of criminal wrongdoing. No charges were filed.
