OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 05/24/2021, Leonardo Rodriguez-Mendoza was crossing Woodhaven Boulevard at Rockaway Boulevard in a marked crosswalk in Queens when he was struck by a vehicle driven by an off-duty New York City police officer. Rodriguez-Mendoza sustained severe injuries in the collision and was hospitalized. He later died from those injuries approximately two months after the crash. Reporting indicated the officer may have been traveling at a high rate of speed at the time of the collision. The New York Attorney General’s Office conducted a special investigation into the deaths connected to the incident and cleared the officer of criminal wrongdoing. No charges were filed.
