On 05/24/2021, Villa Park police officers responded to a call placed by Haven Bailey reporting that someone was walking outside with a gun near East Kenilworth Avenue. When officers arrived, they encountered Bailey walking toward them holding an object that police believed was a firearm. Officers ordered Bailey to stop and drop the object. Police reported that Bailey did not comply, and an officer fired, shooting and killing him at the scene. Authorities later stated the object was a replica gun. Subsequent reporting and records indicated Bailey had been experiencing mental health distress prior to the encounter. The DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office reviewed the shooting and ruled the use of deadly force justified. No officers were charged.
