OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On 05/26/2021, Columbia police officers encountered James Sears while investigating a felony probation violation and alleged drug sales near North Stadium Boulevard. Police reported that during the encounter, Sears produced a firearm toward officers. Two officers fired their weapons, shooting and killing Sears at the scene. The Boone County Prosecutor later reviewed the case and cleared the officers involved. No criminal charges were filed.
