On 06/01/2021, Annapolis police responded to a 911 call placed by Renardo Green’s wife requesting help because he was behaving erratically and harming himself. Police arrived at the home and restrained Green. After emergency medical personnel arrived, Green was placed face-down on a gurney while handcuffed and transported toward a hospital. During transport, he became unresponsive. Green remained hospitalized and died three days later. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner ruled his death a homicide, citing cardiac arrest caused by prone restraint. The case drew public scrutiny after the ruling, and body-worn camera footage of the police interaction was later released. A civil rights lawsuit filed by Green’s family was ultimately dismissed, and no officers were charged.
