On 06/02/2021, Arvada police responded to reports that a man who had held a victim at gunpoint during an armed robbery and stolen her vehicle was at large. Officers located the suspect, identified as Eugene Matthews, in the 8100 block of Garland Drive. During the encounter, police shot Matthews, and he died from his injuries. Police investigations tied Matthews to an armed robbery in which he reportedly held a victim at gunpoint, took her phone and SUV, and fled the scene. Officers attempted to stop the stolen vehicle with spike strips before the shooting occurred.
